Alumnus Julius Coles '66 honored with one of the highest Princeton Alumni Awards

Please join us Thursday, April 12 when Alumnus Coles joins us as our 2007 Alumni Day Crown Forum Speaker. There we will present the B.R. Brazeal Award to the Morehouse student who best epitomizes the life and legacy of Dr. Brailsford R. Brazeal '27.

Africare President Julius Coles, a 1966 graduate alumnus, received the James Madison Medal at Alumni Day and, along with Woodrow Wilson Award winner Paul Sarbanes, emphasized the need for people to engage in public service. The Madison Medal is presented each year to a graduate alumnus or alumna who has had a distinguished career, advanced the cause of graduate education or achieved an outstanding record of public service.

Please find below a copy of the press release issued by Princeton University regarding my receipt of the Madison Medal which is the highest honor given by Princeton University to its graduate alumni.

This award was bestowed upon him with the following encryption "Dedicated Public Servant and Humanitarian, Distinguished Educator, Supportive Mentor, Inspiring Role Model" and was presented at the Annual Alumni Day Luncheon which was attended by nearly 1,200 alumni.

Only 37 of these awards have been given out by Princeton University since they began to award them in 1973. He is only the second African American to receive this prestigious award which has also been given to the following Princeton Alumni: Thornton Wilder, Lowell Thomas, Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr., George F. Will, Cornel West, Peter Bell, Harold T. Shapiro to name a few of the recipients.

The James Madison Medal is named after the former President of the United States and who was one of the first graduate students to attend Princeton University.  The award was established by the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni (APGA), and is presented annually to an alumnus or an alumna of the Graduate School who has a distinguished career, advanced the cause of graduate education, or achieved a record of outstanding public service.
